This year, Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, occurs on Sunday night, September 19th and Monday, September 20th. On Yom Kippur, Jews ask G-d to forgive their misdeeds.
- Yom Kippur atones for sins between G-d and man, but not between man and man. So before the holiday, we forgive others for wrongs they have done to us. We also ask others to forgive us for wrongs we have done to them.
- On Yom Kippur, all adults (including boys and girls over bar and bas mitzvah) don't eat or drink, wear leather shoes, or use lotions. We also spend the day praying in the synagogue.
- It's a mitzvah to eat a lot more than usual on the day before the holiday, so we'll have the strength to fast on Yom Kippur.
