You Are What You Eat, So Eat Kosher!
Do it Right on Passover Night.Talk isn't cheap!
This week's Torah Portion, Shemini, teaches us about the laws of kosher food. Kosher means "fit" or "proper." To live the way G-d wants, we must only eat certain foods. Here are some kosher fun facts:

  • Fish must have fins and scales.

  • Animals have to both chew their cud and have split hooves.

  • We only eat those birds which we know to be kosher by tradition.

  • Insects and all reptiles and amphibians are unkosher. (Certain locusts are kosher, but they are not commonly eaten.)

In general, there are three types of food:

    1) Fleishig - meat and fowl

    2) Milchig - milk, cheese and all dairy products

    3) Pareve - fish, eggs, fruits, vegetables, drinks

The Torah states three times, "You shall not boil a young goat in its mother's milk." This means that we should not eat, cook, or benefit from using milk and meat together.
